ON PLINY’S PATHS is a project that ties the cities of Cologne and Tunis through an artist exchange program. The project is named after the ancient Roman writer Pliny the Elder, who used the Roman road network for his exploratory journeys in the 1st century CE. He visited Cologne and wrote about the city in his famous work “Naturalis Historia”. He also traveled to North Africa, including Tunis, and wrote about the flora and fauna of the region.

The 37 volumes of the “Naturalis Historia”, dating from the 1st century CE, are the oldest systematic encyclopedia to have survived in its entirety and are considered the most comprehensive collection of ancient knowledge in Latin. It covers not only topics of natural sciences, but also geography, medicine, art.

The program enables artists from Cologne and Tunis to travel to the other city and explore it, to discuss together with artists from the twinned cities, to develop new project ideas and to implement artistic projects. The focus of the exchange is the joint discussion about art, nature, and the environment.
