— How to talk about contemporary art, digital media, and artistic research in Tunisian dialect? As Tunisians, we usually use English or French wording when it comes to contemporary art. When trying to translate we encounter difficulties finding equivalents in expressing, wording, and in etymologies. In this workshop, we try to find Tunisian wording in the different dialects. We will check on traditions in order to find Tunisian linguistic resources that can support the development of a vocabulary to discuss contemporary art. The idea is to develop strategies for expression and translation to be able to respond to different situations and contexts in nuanced ways.

We will talk about Amazigh roots and Arabic as the base of use, as well as the French, Italian, Spanish, and Turkish influences and the international impact of English. And of course, depending on the context and the speaker different words can be used to express different meanings but it will always be Tunisian. We will include the raise of slangy and colloquial wording.
